Alignment is the relationship between the door, the frame and the latch hardware. Doors move out of alignment because of wear in pivots or hinges, shifted frames, settling, impact or loosened fasteners. We check reveal (the gap around the door), plumb and square, and strike position before adjusting anything.
Adjustment can mean tightening and re-seating fasteners, shimming hinges, adjusting pivots, moving a strike or tuning the closer. We work from the cause, so that adjustment stays put.
